Though not displayed in this picture, wolves will run in a straight line through deep snow when traveling long distances. The reason for this is to conserve strength in the pack. While the wolf in the front clears the snow and uses its strength to clear it, the rest of the pack simply follows in a premade path. After a while, the leader rests and the next wolf leads for a while. They simply take turns!
