Here we see an omega being put in its place. It is not known for sure the intentions of the pack when they “mistreat” the omega. Popular belief is that they simply prefer having a wolf to pick on, but another idea is that the omega could be the peace keeper of the family. When wolves fight amongst themselves in the pack, the omega can act as a scapegoat for the rest to keep peace. Another idea is that when the pack dominates the omega, they could be trying to toughen it up if ever it had to take care of itself. Either way, the omega is still a valued member of the pack.
An example to help my point a little involves a documentary I once watched where a pack was observed in a controlled environment. The wolves eventually had to be moved to a different location so they were transported in separate cages. When the wolves were let out one by one, the omega had to be last so the other wolves wouldn’t be offended and take it out on the omega. However, when the omega was finally released, the alpha wolf stayed close by to ensure that theĀ it would come out and not be left behind.
